My love, why are you like that, when I love you? Why? I, I know that you love me Why, oh the time that passes My soul Oh where is the justice, your honour the judge? Oh there is no mercy at your hands My torment, to you is nothing. Oh why? My love, why like that? When I love you so? You made me love you Why, why, why My master Oh Why Oh my love One day you will face your fate and ask for mercy from my inspiration Oh my soul I have mourned, mourned, mourned There is no mercy at your hands And my torment, to you is nothing.

Having moved around the world for most of her life, living in Brussels, Egypt, Greece and England, her experience of different cultures has most certainly influenced her music.Natachas first break came when she sang on Balearic beat crew !Loca¡s club hit Timbal, and was drawn into the Jah Wobble circle, singing and co-writing with his just-forming band Invaders of the Heart. (She has recently worked with Wobble again, on the 2002 Wobble/Temple of Sound album Shout At The Devil). She also met Transglobal Underground, the London-based multicultural collective who, in blending electronica, dub, hip-hop and funk with Indian, African and Middle Eastern musical forms, were significant role models for todays world-dance phenomenon. The encounter was to turn into a long-standing, happy association. First guesting with them in 1991, two years later she became a member of the core quartet of Transglobal, as lead singer and belly-dancer (the latter not some kind of limp tourist-pleasing wiggle but the real raq sharki). A couple of years later, it was the bands Tim Whelan, Hamid ManTu and Nick Page (aka Count Dubulah, now of Temple of Sound) who helped her to make her first solo album ...

Once, during a recent trip to Israel, she described herself as "a human Gaza strip". She was referring to the complex melange of influences - both genetic and environmental - that have shaped her both as an individual and as a performer. The daughter of an English mother and a Sephardic Jew father, Atlas grew up in a Moroccan suburb of Brussels, becoming fluent in French, Arabic, Spanish and English. There she learned the "raqs sharki" belly dance techniques, that she uses to devastating effect on stage today, inflamming the audience. Even more striking than Natacha's dance moves, though, is her voice, which swoops and soars, blending unfettered talent and the complexity of Arabic musical theory into a burst of sound that is thrilling, immediate and evocative. Still, though, she recalls the Cocteau Twins' chanteuse Elizabeth Fraser and her oneiric vocalism. "She sings like a nightingale perched on a diamond chalice", the British music magazine Melody Maker wrote. The Natacha's formula is the result of years of musical cross-over since she moved to England, as a teenager and became Northampton's first Arabic rock singer. Later, dividing her time between the UK and Brussels, she sang in a variety of Turkish and Arabic nightclub ...

About Natacha Atlas (from Wikipedia): Natacha Atlas is a Belgian singer known for her fusion of Arabic and North African music with Western electronic music. She once termed her music "cha'abi moderne" (an updated form of Egyptian pop music). Her music has been influenced by many styles including Arabesque music, drum 'n' bass and reggae. Most of Atlas' albums have been produced by TGU. She continues to focus on her Middle Eastern roots, as the titles of her albums imply: Diaspora (1995), Halim (1997) (in honour of Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez), Gedida (1998) and Ayeshteni (2001). In 1999, Atlas collaborated with David Arnold on the song "One Brief Moment." The single featured a cover version of the James Bond theme song from the film You Only Live Twice. Two years earlier, Atlas had collaborated with Arnold on the album Shaken and Stirred, recording the song "From Russia with Love" for the eponymous film (originally performed by Matt Monro). 2000 saw her collaborate with Jean Michel Jarre for the track "C'est ...

Natacha Atlas and unrequited love. A bit of drop out at about 3 min 15 unfortunately. Swells wrote a treatment about arab princes on white chargers, moorish castles and white andalucian villages...a real epic story. Unfortunately, the budget was 7 grand, and we were in Barcelona. So I had to improvise. This is an odd, bollywood inspired romantic tale of Nat's love for a young man, who is blissfully unaware of her existence. She stalks him, but she is being pursued by spirits, the portents of doom, or sommat like that. Lots of bollywood style pillar hugging and that sort of thing. It's all bobbins obviously, but it's fun. Note Parc Guell doubling as Indian palace. We had to sneak in at daybreak, for the early morning light, to beat the crowds, and also because we couldn't afford the permit!
