This is a video showcasing Karen Carpenter's undeniable talents as a drummer. For those who aren't aware of Karen's involvement with the drums, let it be known that they were her first passion and came before she began her career as a singer. Karen's drumming can be heard on many tracks on several Carpenters albums. What's also most notable about Karen is that she sang and drummed simultaneously... her singing never hindered her drumming, and vice versa... she never ever hit a sour note or missed a beat. An extremely small amount of people can profess to having such a talent. "She was a 5'4 tornado, pair of drumsticks in her hand". In June 1981, Karen and Richard released "Made In America" and made a world tour to promote the album with appearances in Brazil and Germany. In November of that year, she and Richard returned home to California. Karen and her husband Tom Burris formally separated that same month. Shortly after Christmas, Karen moved to New York to begin treatment for her anorexia. She sought treatment with psychotherapist Steven Levenkron who was noted for his research into anorexia nervosa and self injury. In April 1982, she took a two-week vacation from her treatment and returned home to California. She and Richard returned to the studio and recorded several songs, including this song, "Now.". At the time of this recording, Karen was heavily anorexic. Richard says she had lost even more weight since the last time he had seen her the year before. Karen returned to New York and stayed there until November 1982. During a two-month stay in a hospital, she was fed intravenously and gained 30 pounds. She returned home for Thanksgiving that year. Although she felt that she was cured, Richard says she just didn't look well and he told her so. The additional weight of 30 pounds added back suddenly on a body that had been underweight for so many years further strained her weakened heart, and she died of heart failure on the morning of February 4, 1983. She was just 32 years old, a month shy of her 33rd birthday. Following Karen's death, Richard returned to the studio and worked on his and ...

Karen's sweet voice singing the sweetest Christmas song. Richard Carpenter composed the music for this song in 1966 when he was 19 years old. Frank Pooler wrote the lyrics twenty years earlier, in 1946, when he also was only 19 years old. The song Pooler had written was to be a Christmas gift for his girlriend, whom he was missing while being away from her during a visit with his parents at Christmas time. Sadly, their relationship ended before he could present it to her. Twenty years later, Pooler was the choir director at California State University in Long Beach, when both Karen and Richard Carpenter were members of the choir. Richard and Karen were performing locally and had tired of playing the usual Christmas fare. Richard asked Pooler, their favorite professor, if he had any ideas for different songs. Pooler remembered the Christmas song he had written many years before and mentioned it to Richard, adding that he didn't think much of the melody anymore. Richard said he would try his hand at writing new music for the lyrics. Within about 15 minutes he was finished creating a song, written by two teenagers who were a generation apart, that was destined to become a Christmas classic. The song was first released as a single (yes, a 45) on November 20,1970, and earned gold record status. This song sparked the idea of a Christmas album by The Carpenters, and on October 13, 1978, "Christmas Portrait" was released with this newly recorded version of the song. Karen re ...

Todd Haynes [Far from heaven, Safe] burst upon the scene two years after his graduation with his now-infamous 43-minute "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" (1987). Seizing upon the inspired gimmick of using Barbie and Ken dolls to sympathetically recount the story of the pop star's death from anorexia, he spent months making miniature dishes, chairs, costumes, Kleenex and Ex-Lax boxes, and Carpenters' records to create the film's intricate, doll-size mise-en-scene. The result was both audacious and accomplished as the dolls seemingly ceased to be dolls leaving the audience weeping for the tragic singer. Unfortunately, Richard Carpenter's enmity for the film led to the serving of a "cease and desist" order in 1989, and despite the director's offer "to only show the film in clinics and schools, with all money going to the Karen Carpenter memorial fund for anorexia research," "Superstar" remains buried, one of the few films in modern America that cannot be seen by the general public.

Karen Anne Carpenter (2nd March 1950 - 4th February 1983) was an American singer and drummer. She and her brother, Richard, formed the 1970s duo The Carpenters. Her drumming skills were considerable, but it is for her vocal performances that she is best remembered. She suffered from anorexia nervosa, a little known disease at the time, and died at the age of 32 from heart failure, later attributed to complications related to her illness. PUBLIC DOMAIN.

Shelley's other song : Big Star - www.youtube.com ======================================== "Johnny Angel" was written by Lyn Duddy and Lee Pockriss and recorded by Shelley Fabares. It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 7, 1962, during a 15-week run on the chart. The Carpenters covered "Johnny Angel" in 1973 as part of a medley of oldies on side B of their album "Now and Then."

This song was recorded in 1978 when Karen was 28 years old. In 1978, Karen and Richard recorded their first Christmas album, "Christmas Portrait." At the time, the original plan had been for them to record a double Christmas album, but in the end, only one album was released. Karen and Richard planned to return to the studio to record more songs for another Christmas album, but health problems for both of them interfered and any further work on another Christmas album was postponed. Subsequently, Karen died of heart failure in 1983. A year after Karen's death, the second album, "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" was released, which included the out-takes from the Christmas sessions as well as new material recorded by Richard. "Little Altar Boy" was the last song on Side A of the album. The song was written by Howlett Peter Smith in 1957 and has also been recorded by Vic Damon, Andy Williams, and Glen Campbell.

Karen Carpenter was best known for her hauntingly beautiful singing voice, but she considered herself a "drummer who sang." (more below) Karen first became fascinated with the drums after joining the high school marching band to get out of gym class. She persuaded the band director to let her switch from glockenspiel to the drums, despite warnings that "girls don't play drums." Carpenter recalled, "That is such an overused line, but I started anyway. I picked up a pair of sticks, and it was the most natural-feeling thing I've ever done." She learned the drums surprisingly quickly. Her first drum teacher was a boy in the drumline obsessed with Buddy Rich. Later, she studied with Bill Douglass, a drummer for Benny Goodman and Art Tatum. At the age of 16, she drummed jazz instrumentals with her pianist brother in the Richard Carpenter Trio, winners of the 1966 Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Earlier the same year, Karen had scored a solo record contract, but the label folded after releasing only one of her singles. In 1968, the Richard Carpenter Trio also won on "Your All-American College Show," this time with Karen singing as well as drumming. In 1969, the Carpenters released their first album, and thanks to 1970's "Close to You," they became superstars. In the early years, Karen stayed behind the drums and sang at the same time, but was pressured to give up her beloved drums to sing front and center, at least on the ballads. Her skills were complimented by drummers Hal ...

KC recorded quite a few songs for her solo, many which were not used. This is one of the song that wasn't used, but it's still very catchy and Karen sounds great as usual. Karen from The Carpenter's (Last Recording) LYRICS/Songtext: Now Now when it rains I don't feel cold Now that I have your hand to hold The winds might blow through me But I don't care There's no harm in thunder if you are there and Now Now when we touch my feelings fly Now when I'm smiling I know why You light up my world like the morning sun You're so deep within me we're almost one (*) And now All the fears that I had start to fade I was always afraid love might forget me Love might let me down Then look who I found And now, now Now when I wake there's someone home I'll never face the nights alone You gave me the courage I need to win To open my heart and to let you in And I never really knew how until now No, I never really knew how until now

This is the full performance of Dancing In The Street on the 'Your All American College Show' by the Carpenters in 1968. Hear Richard confirming that no, it is not an organ 'It's an electric piano'... and check out that awesome drum work by 18 year old Karen... And if that isn't enough for ya... you get to see the trio (yes, the Dick Carpenter Trio, to be exact) win the top trophy and prize money handed out by none other than Zsa Zsa Gabor, and William Shatner!! This was the performance that caused Mr. John Wayne to think that Karen would be perfect for the female lead in his upcoming film 'True Grit'. Karen did read for the part but was beaten out by popular Kim Darby for the role. *poor quality* To see a much better quality, but incomplete video of the same, go here: www.youtube.com Visit www.GoCarpenters.com to help induct the Carpenters into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!
