LOST HIGHWAY by Hank Williams

LOST HIGHWAY by Hank Williams. Written by Leon Payne "Lost Highway", often assumed to have come from Hank's pen, was written by Leon Payne... Payne was a blind musician who worked out of Jerry Irby's nightclub in Houston and guested on the Hayride and the Opry. His original version... had been released on the Nashville-based Bullet label in October 1948. Colin Escott, Hank Williams - The Biography, Boston, 1995, p. 98. MYRTIE (Mrs. Leon) PAYNE: In the early days of Leon's career, he hitchhiked from one place to another, finding jobs wherever he could. Once he was in Califonia hitchhiking to Alba, Texas, to visit his sick mother. He was unable to get a ride and finally got help from the Salvation Army. It was while he was waiting for help that he wrote this song. Telephone interview, Dec 20, 1972; reprinted in Dorothy Horstman, Sing Your Heart Out, Country Boy, New York, 1976, p. 368.

Kaw-Liga - Hank Williams

Hank Williams Singing "Kaw-Liga" Kaw-liga, was a wooden indian standing by the door He fell in love with an indian maid over in the antique store Kaw-liga - a, just stood there and never let it show So she could never answer yes or no. He always wore his sunday feathers and held a tomahawk The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday hed talk Kaw-liga - a, too stubborn to ever show a sign Because his heart was made of knotty pine. Chorus poor ol kaw-liga, he never got a kiss poor ol kaw-liga, he dont know what he missed is it any wonder that his face is red Kaw-liga, that poor ol wooden head. Kaw-liga, was a lonely indian never went nowhere His heart was set on the indian maiden with the coal black hair Kaw-liga - a, just stood there and never let it show So she could never answer yes or no. Then one day a wealthy customer bought the indian maid And took her, oh, so far away, but ol kaw-liga stayed Kaw-liga - a, just stands there as lonely as can be And wishes he was still an old pine tree.

I'll Fly Away - Hank Williams

Some glad morning when this life is over, I'll fly away. To a home on God's celestial shore, I'll fly away. I'll fly away, O Glory, I'll fly away. (In the morning) When I die, Hallelujah, bye and bye, I'll fly away. When the shadows of this life are gone, I'll fly away. Like a bird from prison bars has flown I'll fly away. I'll fly away, O Glory, I'll fly away. (In the morning) When I die, Hallelujah, bye and bye, I'll fly away. Just a few more weary days and then, I'll fly away. To a land where joy shall never end, I'll fly away. I'll fly away, O Glory, I'll fly away. (In the morning) When I die, Hallelujah, bye and bye, I'll fly away.

Hank Williams - The Show He Never Gave

What dreams and demons paced through Hank Williams mind that cold New Years Eve as he lay dying on the back seat of his north-bound Cadillac? Were there glowing images of Audrey, his first wife, and of the son Hank left behind? Did his thoughts flicker to Billie Jean, his flashy new bride? And did he recall the adoring crowds and smiles as they roared at his name? Hank Williams: The Show He Never Gave brings these speculations to life. Using Williams last ride as its dramatic context, the movie permits the haunted singer to play one final show, during which all his fears and passions—all his genius and small-mindedness —tumble out for us to see. Still, this is not a grim or preachy drama. Its dark and tragic elements are emotionally balanced by Williams folksy charm, sly wit and classic songs. 'Sneezy' Waters plays the self-destructive superstar—and performs 23 songs—with profound sympathy and understanding. And he captures both Williams vulnerability and vulgarity without reducing him to a caricature of either trait. Adding to the authenticity of the project is the audience of supporting characters who populate the mythical roadhouse where Hank Williams confronts the life he has made—just as its ending." - Edward Morris, Country Music Editor, Billboard Magazine A Simcom Presentation, A Film Consortium of Canada Production Screenplay by Maynard Collins, based on his original stage play.
