Bacon brother, associate released after court appearance By: Darcy Wintonyk, ctvbc.ca Date: Thursday Mar. 5, 2009 4:47 PM PT A notorious Abbotsford gangster and his close associate have been released on conditions after appearing in court in Port Coquitlam on a total of six fraud-related charges. Jonathon Bacon, the eldest of a trio of brothers, and Dennis Karbovanec, each face three charges related to a 2007 incident believed to involve a leased Mercedes. The charges include possession of stolen property, one count of causing a person to use a forged document and one count of fraud over $5000. Police confirm Bacon was arrested overnight in Abbotsford, and Karbovanec was picked up in Port Moody after an investigation into gangs by the Coquitlam RCMP. The duo are said to have ties to the Red Scorpions gang, which police say has close ties to the Lower Mainland's drug trade. Bacon has a long history of drug and gun-related offenses and has been the subject of multiple warnings after threats were made against his life by rival gangs. He and his brothers have been subject to almost round-the-clock surveillance after younger brother Jamie was targeted in a Langley shooting on Feb. 6. Another associate Kevin LeClair, 26, was shot and killed in that gunfire. Jamie and Jarrod Bacon are both out on bail on drug and gun charges. BC's Integrated Homicide Team laid charges Monday against de facto UN gang head Barzan Tilli-Choli, 26, member Karwan Saed, 32, and 23-year-old associate Aram Ali. All three already face charges of attempted murder and accessory after the fact in connection to a February drive-by shooting outside a Surrey strip club. The gunplay targeted an associate of the Bacon brothers who was sitting in the back seat. Monday's charges are the first that specifically identify the Bacon brothers -- Jonathon, Jarrod and Jamie -- as targets of UN gang violence. Police allege the brothers are at the top of the hierarchy of a rival gang, the Red Scorpions. The founder of the United Nations gang, Clayton Roueche, remains in custody in Seattle awaiting trial for trafficking charges. IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Dale Carr says more charges are on the way. "These types of investigations are complex, long term and resource extensive," he said in a statement. "They often take a great deal of time to see results, often times coming in several phases. This is just another phase in a series of several." The indictment against the men alleges they planned murders in multiple locations in British Columbia, Montreal and elsewhere in Canada. Kevin and Michael (NEW YORK, New York, US) are accomplished in the performance arts. One as a gifted, albeit unusual actor, and the other as a gifted musician. There are six musicians in the band. Each one of them is talented in their own right. Kevin was writing songs and playing coffeehouse gigs before he achieved international fame appearing in some of the most-known movies of our time. Michael: "About ten years ago I yanked my brother out of the music closet and on to the stage. He didn't have much choice as the band was called The Bacon Brothers and he was the only brother I had. We thought it was for 1 gig but we're now are on our fifth CD." In 2009, Kevin and Michael teamed up with legendary Philadelphia singer Bunny Sigler and a group of mummers from a local string band to record a special edition of their song "New Years Day" as a part of a fundraiser to be able to pay for the Mummers Parade in 2010 after the city could no longer fund the parade.
